THE:SORORITY Sisters MeetUp May 2024 – Expat or Migrant? This time in English! (German version below) 

Save the Date – our next Sorority Sisters MeetUp will take place on Thursday, 23rd of May at Teach for Austria. Given the nature of the topic, and to be more inclusive for non-German speakers, the event will be held in English. 

This time, registration is mandatory under the following link: (-> link to registration). Due to the capacity of the location, places are limited, you better be quick to secure your spot! Besides the topical discussion, there will also be an introductory round at the beginning allowing all people in the room to get to know each other. After the talk, there will be enough time for networking. 

Vienna has been a cosmopolitan metropolis and international hotspot for quite some time. As one of the four headquarters of the United Nations, the city houses around 30 international organisations such as the OSCE, the IAEA or OPEC as well as more than 200 headquarters of multinational companies. As a result, many people are seeking to live and work in Vienna.  

Expat or Migrant? Which label is being used for people coming to Austria for work purposes? How are they perceived? What does expats help to properly arrive in Austria, either for their job or their studies? What are the hurdles they are facing? These are the questions we are looking forward to discussing with our three international guests, who will share their expertise and experience with us: 

  • Ana Nestorovic is focusing her PhD research on workplace discrimination and exploring the intricate correlations, interdependencies, and cause-and-effect relationships between gender, race, ethnicity, and class. She is also a highly skilled lawyer from Belgrade, specialising in labour and commercial law. 
  • Cecilia Cadman moved from the UK to Vienna to work for Teach for Austria, where she is responsible for training, coaching and programme development. 
  • Claudia Espinoza is originally from Chile, but moved to Vienna ten years ago for her work in research. She is currently doing her Postdoc in cognitive neuroscience at the Centre for Brain research at the Medical University of Vienna. Prior to this position, she worked at the Institute for Science and Technology in Austria. 

As always, our Sisters MeetUp is open both for members and non-members (or members-to-be), but exclusively for women and people who are perceived as women.

Save the Date – Wir treffen uns am Donnerstag, den 23. Mai zum Sorority Sisters Meet Up im Mai bei Teach for Austria.

Eine Anmeldung ist diesmal erforderlich, melde dich also gleich an! Nach der traditionellen Vorstellungsrunde wollen wir uns diesmal folgendem Thema widmen:

Expat or Migrant?: Welches Label bekommen Menschen, wenn sie nach Österreich zum Arbeiten kommen? Welche Zuschreibungen anderer spielen hier eine Rolle? Welche Dinge helfen anderen dabei an einem neuen Arbeits- oder Studienplatz im Ausland anzukommen und was stellt ein Hindernis dar? Das wollen wir mit 3 spannenden Gäst:innen diskutieren, die ihre Expertise und ihre persönlichen Erfahrungen mit uns teilen:

  • Ana Nestorovic forscht im Rahmen ihres PhDs zu Diskrimnierung am Arbeitsplatz.  Zusätzlich ist ist eine erfahrene Juristin aus Belgrad, spezialisiert auf Arbeits- und Handelsrecht.
  • Cecilia Cadman kam von Großbritannien nach Wien für die Arbeit. Sie ist aktuell bei Teach for Austria für Training, Coaching und Programmentwicklung zuständig.
  • Claudia Espinoza kam vor zehn Jahren für ihre Forschungsarbeit von Chile nach Wien. Aktuell forscht sie im Rahmen eines Post Docs am Insitut für Hirnforschung an der Med Uni Wien mit einem Fokus auf kognitive Neurowissenschaften. Zuvor war sie am Institut für Wissenschaft und Technologie (ISTA) beschäftigt.

Mitglieder sind herzlichst erwünscht, Nicht-Mitglieder unbedingt willkommen. Allein oder mit Freund:innen, Hauptsache ihr seid dabei!

THE:SORORITY ist ein intersektional feministischer Verein zur branchenübergreifenden Vernetzung und arbeitsmarktpolitischen Förderung von Frauen und als Frauen gelesenen Personen. Die Sorority schafft analoge und digitale Räume für Frauen und als Frauen gelesene Personen, um uns gegenseitig zu stärken und zu unterstützen, Erfahrungen und Informationen rund um Berufs- und Arbeitsmarktthemen auszutauschen und voneinander zu lernen.
